The K.L. Rice farm was acquired in 2000 at a size of 132 acres with 50 acres of planted rice.
Currently the farm is in a developmental phase, with Kilombero short grain rice planted.
To assist with the ongoing shortages of grain in Tanzania, efforts are being made to replanting with the new form of sustainable rice, Nerica. It is considered to have a higher yield with less water and fertilizer usage.
European Universities group are also considering to use the farm to research new varieties for higher yielding rice.
